  • Application deadline 8 pm Friday, April 7, 2023. Interviews will be conducted by the SFTR Board of Directors on Monday, April 10 at 7:30 pm. Location to be advised. Interviews are mandatory.
  • Must be a Graduating Senior at Felix Varela Senior High School, active member of the school’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter.
  • Must have volunteered/participated in South Florida Trail Riders community service activities and/or events.
  • Must have plans to pursue studies, and a career, in any of the Animal Sciences such as, but not limited to: Veterinary practice or research, veterinary technician, livestock management or production, horse training, farrier, equine barefoot trimmer, animal welfare and rescue, equestrian facility management, livestock inspector, wildlife and natural resource management, animal husbandry, animal genetics, education, animal related pharmaceuticals, animal nutrition, education and research in any of these areas or any others related to animals.
  • Must write an essay, not to exceed 350 words. Tell us in specific and clear details your plans to apply your FFA and SFTR experiences into your education and career goals and objectives; and how you intend to foster the ideals of ethical and humane treatment of animals, preservation of natural resources, and a commitment to community service in your future. Founded in Miami in 1978, the South Florida Trail Riders is a non-profit Florida Corporation whose goals are the preservation and creation of multi-use trails and open green spaces where the public in general can participate in responsible and recreational equestrian activities. We also perform community service and have annual activities to support various charities such as St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Whispering Manes Horse Assisted Therapy for Autistic and special needs children, SFTR Christmas Toy Drive reaching 1,000 children in So. Miami-Dade County, So. Fla. SPCA Horse Rescue, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Welfare, & others. We have also provided horse feed and supplies to natural disaster areas in Florida and outside Florida. We participate in many civic and patriotic parades and events such as: The Veterans Parade in Homestead, Fourth of July Parade, The Annual 9-11 Freedom Walk, Jr. Orange Bowl Parade, So. Miami Parade of the Elves, as well as past Homestead Rodeo parades & past Miami Dade County Youth Fair Parade of Horse Breeds. For the past eight years we have been granted the honor of Presenting The Colors at the Miami-Dade Cattle and Agriculture Show.
